Just curious who else on here is going down the Virtual reality path? I know we are all retro gamers on here, but thought I would test the waters.

Anyone else have a DK2 from Oculus VR on order?

I've played some of the demos at past E3s and was blown away, so I pre-ordered the DK2 right when it was first announced ... still haven't received an update on when I'll get it in my hands.

It does seem like they are dragging their heels a bit with each revision but from what I have read, the facebook buy out has made it so they have enough cash to make the consumer model a bit better so it was back to the drawing board. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.

If the DK2 is as immersive as all those who have tried it is saying, it is going to be a game changer. Cannot wait to get mine.

Rather than make a new thread. as of me writing this, Rift pre orders open in 12 hours and 44 minutes! Who is going to be ordering when the time is up? I'm so pumped right now!

Um, yeah. Have you tried it? have you tried the DK1 or DK2 or Vive?

I tried a VR headset about 20 years ago, on Hexen or Heretic and it had a laughable field of view and a resolution of something like 320x240 and it was incredible. I was blown away, I saw the potential in the future even though I knew the tech wasn't ready.

The next unit to come out will be the Vive from HTC/Valve and then more companies will get into it and improve it and Oculus and HTC will iterate their units and everything will gradually improve. So I'm going to stay over here in optimism and positivity land, and you can enjoy your cynicism where ever you want Mr Grumpy Cat.

Mates had  version 1 and 2 for over a year now and he actually buys his games based on if they are compatible with it.  Its absolutely awesome and would love to own one.  Only thing that has put me off up to date is knowing there is a full version on the way.  I would rather wait for the completed model for the price :D  VR has come a hell of a long way now due to technology and new ideas :D

That full version starts pre-orders in 3 hours and 13 minutes with delivery within a month (or latest end of march if it goes to pot)! Got my money ready so they can shut up and take it.

I can guarantee it would make me vom, I couldn't play Half Life 2 without blowing chunks, even bloody Disney Infinity does the same.

Something to acclimatize to I guess. Still want one just the same, to fill my empty draws.

It is done....I'm in Australia and with shipping it's $781 which I think is way too much, must be a big box I guess cause $132 for shipping sounds crazy, but $649 for the thing isn't that bad. It's $599 in the USA. Anyway, it's like 2:30am and I have work in 6 hours. Yawn.

Not the Rift. I'll probably grab the Samsung VR for Galaxy phones to try out. And I'll probably buy the PS4 version. And I'm pretty interested in the new upgrades the HTC VR setup got at CES. I'm also interested in Hololens and Magic Leap.

But The Occulus Rift interestd me the least so far.

I want the rift for sit down experiences, and I'll get a Vive as well. The GearVR hasn't interested me but Hololens has potential but it needs a far wider FOV from what I can tell. Magic Leap also could be incredible given the buzz but they're damn secret about stuff and I don't know how I feel about AR for gaming, it gave me about 5 minutes worth of wow factor on the 3DS before I got bored but for practical tasks, AR is going to revolutionise things.

Nice! I'm getting mine shipped in the first batch, I paid what I paid and would do it again, but the most rubbish part of the whole experience was that the order was in USD and nowhere did it say that, that's poor programming that your webstore cant tell you that. Especially when the USD price is $599. I selected Australia as the shipping location and the price changes to $649 + $132 for shipping. So $781 - what I was expecting...until the next day when all Aussies and Kiwis are still confused and get the official word that hey guys - those prices are USD.

I mean, I've been waiting decades for good VR so I still would have dropped the $1100 on it (yep, that's what it actually is with shipping to Oz), but it's a bit sour that they screwed that part up so bad and haven't acknowledged it anywhere. Well....just gotta sit back now and wait and hope the AUD doesn't tank any further in the next few months.

My first VR headset cost just over $1000 US, but that was in the mid-late 90's. VR1 I think it was called. Pretty cool at the time, but way to much of a pain in the ass to use regularly. Plus the big lack of software. Best thing we had for it was the original Descent (which was badass in VR).

I know I've told this story before, but here goes.

I also had the VFX1 in the late 90s. It was awesome for playing quake and mechwarrior.

Here are some nostalgia pictures of my setup:

It was using a compass and/or gyro but the problem for me was all the monitors I had back then. They interfered with the signal so it did not work right.

Luckily, the cable was quite long so I could walk out of the computer room and into the walk-in closet next door.

One day, I was playing Quake on it in the closet with the door closed. The headphones on them really blocked out the sounds around you, but I heard a muffled scream.

I lifted the visor up and saw my girlfriend on the floor in front of the closet. She had come home, called for me but did not get a response, so she thought I wasn't home and started doing laundry.

She was opening the door to the walk-in closet to put in some clothes and there I was, waving like a madman.

Still laugh about it to this day =)

Any wife or partner that comes home to find their other half in a closet, naked (you did say you were naked didn't you Turranius?) wearing only a VR headset is going to ask some serious relationship questions.

Hhehe hell yeah... the number one use for VR ;)

Reminds me of something completely off topic... as a kid used to go with my sis next-door as she used to babysit for them, they had 2 girls.  The dad there was a carpenter, however long long ago when he was a kid he was dared to run across a rail track when a train was coming.  The dumb ass did it and the even more dumb ass tripped over.  He was scared on his body and had to chop off an arm and a leg.  Fast forward a few decades and I am in his house aged around 9 years old.

Played hide and seek, I decided to hide in the mom and dads bedroom, they always had Wardrobes (closets for US) to hide in.. It was dark, only light from moon and street lights in window.  The guy being a 1 armed carpenter used to have tools specially made that attach to his stumps.  Little did I know he had a god damn dummy (model thingy) life-size in his bedroom with all the bits attached ready for when he needed them.

I walked into a room in the dark to see a fucking man with drills and saws for fucking arms staring at me.. That was a bad day at age 9, I screamed like a baby for many nights hehehe ;)

Yep that's what I had. VFX1... couldn't remember the name. So at least two people bought it, Ha!

Hilarious story too. We just used to have one person hold the cable while the player sat in a swivel chair to play.
