Hyperspin stops working on Windows 11 Home/Pro (version 24H2) after update

UPDATE ....

I have just installed Windows 11 HOME EDITION onto a new SSD  (version 24H2) and all was ok, UNTIL a security update  November 21, 2024—KB5046740 (OS Build 26100.2454) Preview stopped Hyperspin from working.

It's now safe to say that if you want Hyperspin to continue working .... DO NOT update to Windows 11 (version 242H)

@%$#%#^.  I JUST installed 11 tonight.  I can't get Hyper to run at all, or HyperHQ.  The old sxs dll does nothing either, I'm guessing there's no workaround for this at all?  I am definitely reverting to 10 if that's the case.

Assuming I can do this (given it's a brand new SSD I'd have to do a clean install of 23h2, which is fine,) won't the built-in update stuff simply undo it and go back to 24h2?  Or can I actually stay on the 23 version?

All Windows 11 users on this forum should immediately disable all update services and wait for notification of a fix.

If you are able, clone your boot drive to preserve your compatible Windows 11 version.

Hopefully it fixes itself after version 24H2

@pavlovtiger, I had no luck reverting back from 24h2 to 23h2.  The option to remove 24h2 was not available.  Also, my Windows 11 recovery was disabled automatically after updating to windows 11.  I had to restore back to Windows 10.  I just backed up my files before restoring back to Windows 10.

Bills already off the deep end, it's more like Satya Nadella and his f*ckin minions can eat a bag of dicks. I hate em all. Him and his diversity and inclusion BS. (insert long story here)

Anyway, Here is a page of confirmed issues with 24H2, The list on the page looks to be actively maintained as issues are reported to MS. Item 1 on the list looks relevant to me as it relates to issues with games launching. I would monitor this for status updates on a resolution to item 1.

I havent done a hyperspin build in decades and got a new mini PC for my dedicated cabinet, but funny enough had everything booting with the DLL on windows 11.  Then overnight my PC shuts off and reboots and I google a bit and remove other stuff I installed.  Come to find out this system update kills it for sure.  After uninstalling the version mentioned in this thread things worked fine.

Why cant the authors of Hyperspin just open source it at this point now that its been.  There are so many systems built with it who publish complete builds and its been 6 years since 1.5.1 release?  Someone should just decompile it like they do with Mario 64 and hard fork it.

Add me to the list. After Win 11 Home updating to 24H2 Hyperspin, HyperHQ etc no longer launch. 

I'm assuming the worst here when I say there is no fix?

Again, it seems to work on virtualbox. I dont' have a spare hard disk to do the test on a real machine, can someone try a thing?

Install windows 11 home 24h2, switch to pro with an activator or a cheap serial, try if the thing works.

Que lamentable está situación, por suerte yo uso Windows 10, pero si estaría genial que se pudiera liberar el codigo de Hyperspin, así se podría mejorar y que vuelva a ser el mejor front end. Por mi parte no he querido cambiarme a otro front end ya que desde el 2011 que vengo creando mi Hyperspin, he hecho muchos temas, medias y configuraciones, que ni loco pienso perder tantos años de trabajo jsjsj.

I kno they made an up date but can't get it to up date see I'm not going to lie I bought mines on Amazon I never new about this whole hyperspin thing I'm new to pc but I wanted to Plat retro games and on Amazon hyperspin 12tb hard drive was being sold so I bought it but Notice that rocket launcher has a passwand I woke app today and I had no password and all my files was gone from rocket launcher all thall the emulators Disappeared. So I tried to update to see if I can get him back. But noticed that it happenedaddy had less systems. With the update.

 And I didn't like that so would like to go back to old version can anyone send me that file please I even got the core one to with the Kodi retro bat launch box that 1.The games are running laggy.So I just wanna go back to the old one, please.Someone send me the old files

It's not that straightforward.  You would have to start from scratch.  I realize you probably don't want to go through the time to learn and set up everything but none of us can help in this situation.

Just purchase another one, then wipe the original 12tb to create a backup/clone of your new drive.

Then you can experiment and learn how to setup and maintain your own hyperspin eventually.

Please don't reply to existing threads that are on different topics to ask for help with a problem. Normally the best practice is to start a new thread. In your case, though, I would contact the seller you bought your drive from for support. Thanks.

I managed to get it to work. But it's brutal. I had to format and reinstall windows 11. Here is the catch though. If you install a fresh Win 11, install Hyperspin, launch Hyperspin without Win 11 having updated to 24H2, Hyperspin will work but will stop working when you do update to 24H2.

So:

1: Fresh Install Windows 11.

2:Make sure you update first to 24H2.

3: Launch Hyperspin for the first time and it will work.

 

Now I said it was brutal, well it is, because you have to format your system. 

The other thing is, I have no idea why doing it this way works. I have no idea why launching Hyperspin for the first time without the 24H2 update, breaks Hyperspin when you update to 24H2. I also have no idea why an existing installation is 50/50 on breaking after you update to a major cumulative update for windows 11.

There are a lot of people smarter than me so I will leave it to them to figure out.

I installed w11 24h2 iso downloaded from microsoft website on virtualbox and HyperSpin is working.

24h2 anyway is a trainwreck, it breaks also other games and apps, not only HyperSpin
