Should I buy a Wii U

I've been following the Wii U for a while, from its poor launch to its almost demise and now to its sudden resurrection. I was tempted in the past by Super Mario 3D but I couldn't help but think I'd be buying something that'll be dead by the end of 2014 therefore £250 seems a lot to pay for 1 game. Along comes Mario Kart 8 and again I'm thinking should I, shouldn't I ?

I've done the PS3 and 360, played a stupid amount of hours on COD to the point I got bored. I sold the PS3 after a month as it just wasn't for me. The PS4 and XBONE just seem more of the same just a little shinier. I actually spent a few hours on a friends XBONE playing Titanfall and Watch dogs, they just didn't do it for me, again it's just another fps and gta clone in my eyes.

Back to the Wii U, this thing just looks like fun, simple pick up put down fun, something I can play with my young son, something that would entertain all ages. Something the other consoles are definitely lacking. I should also add that the likes of Mario and Sonic (Sonic 2D) are some of my favourite games. I did try the original Wii but thought the motion control was just a silly gimmick, sold it after a week.

Anybody else in the same situation, want 1 but don't want to get burned to the tune of £250 ?

Do you guys already have 1 and think it's awesome, or maybe you have 1, played it for a week and now it sits collecting dust.

I got a wii u when they came out, played cod black ops 2 for ages cos using a wiimote with it is ace in my opinion, got a few other games but nothing keeps me or my kids interested for long so its been collecting dust for a while, the games that have come out resently just seem like we have seen them all before like mario kart, donkeykong etc.

I also have a ps4 and ps3 and its the ps3 that gets the most use as there is a ton of games for it and if you get a ps plus account you get free games every month.

I'm kind of in the same boat, I can't bear to fire up BF3 or 4, I'm also burned out and bored of fps, and I've heard the same from many others.

I bought a Wii at launch for something different to playing PC games, and thanks to wiiflow and Dolphin I'm still playing Wii games with the children.

Would I buy a WiiU, yes, if the price was right and it has the software. But just like fps games, I'm also a little bored of Nintendo constantly rehashing the exact same games over and over. I've needed a break of around 5 years to enjoy another Zelda game.

When the Wii came out I had money, but not so much lately.

I would hold on the Wii U also unless the price was right. It can be modded for wiiflow and all the plugins, but the Wii U games just lack for me. I ll just stay on my regular wii.

Hey connorsdad, wasn't aware of a ressurection but I'm out of touch with Wii stuff anyway, great news if that is the case. Might consider getting one.

Mario World 3D and Mario Kart 8 have thrown it a life line. Seems there's a few good titles coming soon too. I wonder if it will be the DS all over again, that thing failed miserably at launch, look at it now.

Every time Im in TESCO on my weekly shop im tempted just to throw one in. Fact is though Im just fed up getting sucked in on games that just have no longevity. Dont get me wrong, Mario's are normally good for keeping me gaming. Since Mario 64 came out they do pile a load of gameplay in all of their games. But other than that I just seem to be spending 30-60 pounds on games I play for an hour and then get shelved. All consoles just seem to be the same at the moment... very few games that keep me hooked, allowing me to get my monies worth for that kind of price tag. This is why I have sold my Wii, PS3 and XBox a log time ago and apart from missing GTA V I have no regrets at all!

Dont get me wrong though, its not just consoles doing this. The PC is just as bad. I used to Pre order everything I knew I wanted. But then developers seem to think they can release games that aint even finished. I mean its not just a few bugs... sometimes the games cant even be loaded? I bouaght ROME II and it took 3 months of patches, fixes and searching on forums just to get the game loaded. Even when I did I then found the game was terribad. Far too many times, big companies (often EA), seem to take your money and offer nothing but.... we are working on it.

Sorry, going a little off topic here. But the fact still remain and I have set myself some rules when it comes to the buying of games.

1. I will never buy a system just for 1 game. I notice that in most cases I never turn the system on to play it after a month. Maybe when its in the bargain basket Im tempted but by then its normally ported to PC anyways ;)

2. Never pre order anything (apart from FIFA hehehe). The amount of kickstarters and games I have pre ordered just to find they are rush jobs. Made for bucks and the developers cash out once they have their pound of flesh. Only to leave me with a "could have been great" game. 2 weeks later its on sale for 2 bucks.

4. I now try before I buy. Get a rip of the game. If its good I buy. If its not, but Im tempted, I make a donation to wht I think it should be worth. If its shit, I delete it.

5. Never EVER, EVER, and forever buy another call of duty game for the rest of my life :)

So my conclusion. Unless thats on sale for less that 80 pounds.... no I wont buy ;)

connor,

I have the original wii from 2006. I have hacked it to run the Homebrew Channel (HBC). The original wii has two USB ports in back and an SD card slot on front. The HBC allows me to run "back-ups" of wii ISOs on the hard drive and the same can be said for the gamecube.

If my wii died today, I would rather buy the original wii at a cut rate price, rather than buying the Wii U. A little shopping online and you can get a fully modded wii with pre-filled hard drives, if you wish to go that route. It's up to you.

If I speak to the wife nicely I could throw the club card points in and get the MK8 bundle for around £90 :)

I think I will more than likely purchase one soon, just thought it would be good to get your opinions of the Wii U :)

I got a Wii-U and I like it.

Games I got: Zelda Wind Maker HD, Pikmin 3, Super Mario Bros U, Zombi-U, Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate, Assassins Creed IV - Black Flag, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Mario Kart 8. I expect to get Bayonetta 2, Smash Brothers, that Zelda game they're planning to release next year. Splatoon seems like it could be fun and there's some other games I saw on E3 that got my attention.

So yes, I like the Wii-U and think it's worth it. But I do admit Nintendo are re-hashing a lot of the same things. But they're not the only ones doing that and heck... I like the stuff Nintendo puts out, even if I've seen it all before.

Congrats - bought one myself about a month back. MK8 is great...so is Mario 3D. I was able to take advantage of the free game for buying MK8 and picked up Pikmin 3, another good one. I never finished Wind Waker so was thinking about picking that one up used.

Anyway, have fun with the new toy :)

nice going connorsdad. I tried playing my legacy wii console last week and I couldn't get two wii remotes synced at the same time....maybe I am doing it wrong. So I could only play single player since I couldn't get the 2nd wii remote to sync to the console....weird issue since I not played it in a very long time....hopefully it isn't a more serious problem...

My hacked Wii is getting dusty but the kids still play from time to time. I'd get a Wii U but it would be hacked within 5 minutes of being unboxed. XB and PS etc are great and all but I'm a PC player so the controllers kinda feel strange for me. I do like the look of the PS4 controller though.

Best Buy had a great deal on a WiiU deluxe set last year after Xmas so I picked one up. $300 for WiiU deluxe set with Mario U and Luigi U bundled, plus ZombieU as a free game (was 4 choices but the other 3 were not for me), $15 gift card for spending over $300, and a $35 gift card for buying the WiiU deluxe set itself. So basically I got the deluxe system and 4 games (got Zelda HD from the gift cards) for that price.

Since then, I've picked up Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Mario 3D World, Nintedoland, and got WiiU Party for free from buying Mario Kart. Out of all of them Mario 3D World is the most fun, especially if you go for unlocking everything or like to play local multiplayer. Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is a close 2nd being that it's a very challenging game yet not unfair in difficulty.

The Wii side is of course hacked... 1 TB of every Wii game I would ever want to play, and then some more added for the heck of it, is on an external HDD that sits on top of the console. Had to buy a "Y cable" for it to work, but it was cheap and haven't had any problems at all since.

My girlfriend got it, and for a while we all played mario U on it. I think the inclusion of the screen gamepad as an assistant with the block placing is a really cool idea, and we had a lot of fun with it. We also got really pissed at each other when the "block placer" would put it somewhere it shouldn't have been on accident, or couldn't keep up with jumps haha.

Having played quite a few hours of Mario Kart now I can say I'm very impressed with it, it's a really fun game :)

The streaming to the game pad is absolutely spot on, no lag whatsoever, in fact my little boy is lying next to us in bed playing it while I'm typing this post :)

Anyone know where I can get a filled 1TB HDD for the wii side of things here in the UK?
