Shocking moments in gaming

When you had to drop a controller and walk away?

Metal gear solid......psycho mantis reads your mind (memory card) and tells you what is on it.....freaked me out....had to walk away till the goosebumps went away....

Seems silly now, but Half Life (Original)...

The first time I played it I had never been treated to a thought out story like that... thinking your dead... but not... its part of the story. But the moment that got me was when the Marines tip up. I thought they were on my side and decided to go running up to them for help. One of the best games ever

Maybe not a shock per se but the ending of God Of War 2 when the titans are climbing up mount Olympus damn near made me shit my pants

You will probably think less of me but my nephew and I both bought Lost Odyssey at the same time, and in our respective rooms started playing at the same time with the intent to finish it first. I'm hours into it, and there is a part wherein you learn you're the kids grandfather and that their mother is dying and I started shamelessly crying my eyes out. So as the funeral scene is playing out on my television and I'm holding back sobs, my nephew throws open my door and looks in, his tear stained face meeting mine.... and we both start laughing like madmen going "You're at that part too!?!". I guess maybe it wasn't shocking, but it was a fantastic video game moment.

There's been quite a few, but recent memory brings these to mind.

Bioshock had many moments, from the shocking beauty of the world the twists in the story, making that decision with the little sisters; and one of my favourite characters the Big Daddies.

Amnesia the Dark Decent gave me the heebie geedies so bad I could only play it for about 30 minutes before it just got too tense. Loved it and I screamed like a girl.

Limbo, wonderful strange calm feeling you get from this game, shockingly simple and great ending.

Metal Gear Solid 1 for me. Near the end, once you find out that the government official is in on it, and he even contacts you. The feeling near the end of that game was incredible.

Surprised no one has mentioned Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem's Sanity tricks it plays on you when Sanity meter gets low.

One that made me almost keel over was near the end of the game my first time playing through and my sanity meter was low. On top of the screen getting all blurry, a screen came up and said "Now erasing/formatting your Gamecube memory card, Please don't turn off your console!"

I was like "Whaaaaaat????? WTTTFFFF????!!!!"

Yea, then the screen flashes back to the normal gameplay screen. Freaky, but a great way for the devs to spice up the game.
