My Vote is for the third one as well. If you have high quality good looking box art it showcases it. The controller highlights are neat as well.

Yeah, the third example seems better. Using horizontal offiical wheelart isn't that bad, I tried it on a theme while trying different layouts. The infos on the video should be double checked for readability :)

Are you planning info for all games on an artwork layer? It will be a nightmare...

3rd indeed... but HQ box art would be needed for all systems with this layout?  I love the design of this, very clean looking :) Does the box on the right change if the shape or ratio of the box on the left changes.

Example, some boxes are square so wouldnt fill the gap like this.  SNES, N64 have their boxes horizontal... just wondering how this would look?

Great design though mate, love it!

ok let me explain the layout

LEFT SIDE - Big box art

RIGHT SIDE - Video with text on top

BOTTOM -  Wheel

Right top corner of the video - Controller highlight for 1P/2P

:) the 3rd shall be (I m a bit worried that vids will lose so much quality, as I m a regular member with 240p vids xD)

Have to think how to do it for systems like SNES/N64 ... the box art is vertical ... and GBC/GBA/PS1 and so on are using square ones...

Plus I would need help to do all those text artworks plus the 1p/2p stuff for each game....

Use a scanline artwork (not 100% alpha) as video overlay. In Aeon Nox XIII I'm using video overlay to fake a crt effect (scanlines+dark borders) :P

Boxarts are nightmare as every system has custom size. Take it as it is: in some systems boxarts will be a bit too little. I have a certain idea of "one game, one cover" to get consistency but it will take ages (and I still have to make 2000+ mame flyers, some from scratch -.-)

Look at the first link in my signature. You can create an openoffice document and batch stuff in photoshop from it :) It's just a bit faster than making everything in photoshop BUT, more important, the openoffice file is re-usable to batch a different layout.

I found your main menu design the other day, and decided to apply it on my brand new 1.4 setup.

It look awesome. Thank you for your work.

Also, am I the only one that prefer design #1 for the game wheel ???

I just think it 'fits better' with the 'minimalist' design from the main menu.

also, I really like the 'box art' as a selectable for the wheel menu ....

Oh well, I'll be following your progress none less.

glad you like it ...

Yeah #1 seems to be the best option quality-wise

Yeah I m trying to have the same size on bax arts and if I will use the box arts as artwork not wheel, I will make them .swf for the smoothing effect.

But one thing is sure if I m gonna go with the 3rd, will have to make more templates because of snes/n64/gbc/gba/ and so on :P

It is doable but will take time.

As for MAME... for me is my last priority... way too many games ... and way too little amount of flyers... template will be done but the rest I don't know ... we will see

I really like the controller highlights. 3 is my vote as well. How are you scraping for the game data (controllers and info)?

Posted

Yeah it will be a layer artwork

Try it yourself if you want (only for 3D world runner) https://mega.nz/#fm/79wR0RjJ

Here is a screen using #3 in HS (boxart not yet converted to .swf)

Why is Mario in your 3D World Runner game? Do you plan on having different backgrounds as well?

Your themes looks really good but there are a lot of systems without box art or even game descriptions. How would you deal with this for systems like Sega Naomi or Model 2 and 3 or ZX Spectrum or Amiga where you literally have thousands of games?

Wow, man your work is really clean. I'm a little jealous, mine is going to look like a mismash compared to yours. The most recent picture posted looks very clean and nice, I'm thuroughly impressed.

As far as box-art sizes, my personal recomendation (though tedious) is to use MSPaint to resize them all to the same pixel size. It's how I do it. It takes time, but once you've spent an afternoon doing it, it looks amazing. I did it with all my NES box art AND cartridge art already and I'm moving onto Sega Genesis as well.

I look forward to seeing more of your stuff. I'd love to get your input when I'm able to finally show mine off as well (Still putting some finishing polish before it's ready for public view)

What if, instead of boxart, you had naked ladies?

Because I don't like boxart, but I do like the naked ladies.

You dirty dawg ;)
