adamg Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Would one want Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop to create the media? It seems like vector would be the way to go so that it could be resized or am I overthinking it?
thatman84 Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Seems like most people want the same core thing, an open space for artwork projects to be viewed and source available for people to work on, I wonder if Hyperspin admin would be interested in thinking about a solution. As a young hyperspinner it does seem like a founder of community created high quality art, but I could be wrong. Anyway hopefully a solution comes up soon that works for the majority. JayC Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 You can go either way, but I think there are benefits from using Photoshop over Illustrator because cutting and cleaning and effects/blending options are the strong suit of Ps. The problem with an totally open way of accessing what he have, is what we have many times already. People jump in and grab everything without ever contributing anything. We could opt for a system where we distribute the ongoing projects before they are finished...but the quality will suffer and I really don't see any reason to do it. While we work on a wheel set for instance a lot of wheels pour in from all over the place and we have to manually go through each one and check both accuracy and quality, before that the set is very much not finished and have errors in it so why would anyone want that. And as we still post everything openly in threads where you can download them the extra step of re-packing a zip file all the time and posting it seems ridiculous imho.
adamg Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 I think the intention is to make a wheel, approve a wheel, release a wheel to use your example. There is no need to wait till ALL the wheels of a set are done to release everything that is done. Release 1 finished, entire finished thing at a time. Have a database of everything that can be downloaded on an individual level. As to people not contributing... isn't that the point? We make things for other people to use?

JSinn Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Instead of answering questions all day (like I did yesterday) I'm going to follow the system that has been in place from the beginning of HS. Our system is quite simple and easy to use and follow. I am seeing a few good ideas, but mostly excuses not to help out. HyperVault is simply a GoogleDrive account, you sign up with Google to get your free 15GB and then we give you access to the project that you want to work in. (the whole public don't need access to raw unworked images) We make announcement threads for the projects that we are working, granted some people work on their own stuff off site and that's what we are trying to compile here. Easy right? In these announcement threads we post our WIP as we go, where the public can grab images before full packs are released. JSinn Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Im sure that I am forgetting something. . . Maybe the other HQ wheel sets that I helped on? Not sure if that counts? Anyways, I'll probably get threads started for: GameCube Discs (yes I know there's already a set with many missing) GameCube Wheels (prob not a full redo, but at least a proper set) Way down the line: Sony Playstation 2 Cases/Discs (thanks to 32assassin's image sources) Wii Cases/Discs |Visit my [YouTube] channel || My projects - [Downloads] || GameCube HQ Disc Project || GameCube HQ Disc Progress || HyperSpin United Spreadsheet |
adamg Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 I am trying to get an over view of how this is currently done and who is actively trying to help with these projects. Much of what you guys do is not common knowledge so in a sense, I am playing catch up, trying to understand how it all works. Based on this thread, there are not too many of you guys. To curtail that I am trying to find a way to get photoshop for a reasonable price. I do not mind learning but please bare with me as I try to understand the process. I would hope that you can see the need of clarity so as to move a project like this forward.

adamg Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 I am also still syncing my media so hopefully I will soon be able to audit that and see where we really stand.

JSinn Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 I am also still syncing my media so hopefully I will soon be able to audit that and see where we really stand. The good thing about that is I'm Admin over the Download Section here at HS too. (although I haven't done much work in there of late, been working on my projects) I can add/rename/edit/change authors of any uploaded entries. I can't create new categories though, we need a website admin for that. |Visit my [YouTube] channel || My projects - [Downloads] || GameCube HQ Disc Project || GameCube HQ Disc Progress || HyperSpin United Spreadsheet |
dougan78 Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Can you direct me to an example? http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/index.php?/topic/14382-Microsoft-MS-DOSOr click on my name and review my posts on the forums. I have over 5000 posts most of them sharing wheel art on threads to be used by everyone.
JayC Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 There is a handful or more of people that actually do artwork stuff, a lot of people stop by and help out for a while and then vanish.
wesfranks Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Not that my opinion counts, but for the time I have been looking at this, I have seen around 5 major iterations of this discussion. Each of them had different levels of operational success, but usually ending up with the same conclusion. Things were lost in the process. In many cases, this was probably not a bad thing (who remembers the rainbow placeholder wheel set for Game Boy Color). I think the lofty goal of a 100% completed system should be something that people can point to and will definitely be a great accomplishment when that goal is reached. But I also think that the stair steps that had to be taken to reach that goal should be visible (and accessible by the average user) until that end goal is reached. It used to be the wild west around here. Then we got cool new things, for example, the Unified Theme/Unified Mega/Unified Widescreen Theme projects that went through the first FTP reorganization, then the first FTP art approval/denial process, then misplaced/buried and faded into obscurity until revived recently. And funny thing, all the newer guys now think it's still cool, even though it was one of the preliminary stair steps that were taken a long time ago. The HyperSpin Project (not the BG/UG torrent, but the official, supersecret HS art project) may have produced and released many great things, but now looking back it is difficult for the average user to point to anything specific. Due to the 100% completion requirement, I can't recall anything that was released during that time except roque releases less than 100%, WIP YouTube videos of things to come and many unofficial systems that were eventually eradicated because the person who released it also released a rom pack to match the set they made. About the only place you can see those systems now is on YouTube from dickheads advertising 8gb drives. The current method of posting progress on separate forum posts until complete is informative, but that method was also used in the past and how many how-to posts and artwork WIP progress posts were lost when this website was updated. Recently, I saw a request for a Flash Games project that I know I saw like twice before over the years. The wheel count was at 165 then. Now the entire Flash Games system is back to zero. Those poor guys stopped talking about Flash games and ended up talking about Lifesavers and Nabisco crackers. What about Fancy Pants? Now that was a cool game. On another lost system, need I tell anyone that the Big Fish Games XML and artwork that is on HyperSync does not include "hidden object games"? Since those games are really not accessible anymore, how long until it is simply deleted from the system. These are just a few examples. I just remember this site http://hyperbase.hyperspin-fe.com/ , the measure of HyperSpin's progress, being a lot more full several art project iterations ago. Now, the Game Boy Color for example, which used to be 100% complete (with ugly rainbow wheels) is only at 9%. OK, so that's a joke. But Visual Pinball at 0% across the board? Oh, and Big Fish Games is 0% also. Who deleted that? Flash Games doesn't even make the list anymore. Is that the beginning of the end? Where did they all go? I just think it's important to remember that as the wheel is reinvented that in the end, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Otherwise, once again things will be lost.
dougan78 Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 I like the process we have now. The problem is distributing stuff. I personally would like to see: 1. Make wheel 2. Post wheel 3. Approved 4. Added to hypersync. Then the whole conversation of art is laid to rest. My thoughts anyway and I would be willing to let the artwork creators approve stuff for distribution via hypersync and add stuff if possible. We manage pretty well and are all pretty consciously working to make quality stuff. That is my dream...

The HyperBase team is working a system for the Media Approvers to be able to add media and directly distribute.
