keltoigael Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Not at all; it creates a meta database from multiple sources, including HyperSpin XML files, and uses that to find additional information (full name, genre, etc.) to the ROM files it finds in your directory structure. Every ROM you have will be displayed automatically, but for those it can find the meta information it will add that as well. Sweet https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGAi8dJWR4bpg1oRfItcPCw
Fromlostdays Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I have to say, I download RetroFE last night, only had a few minutes to look at it, and I thought I had a good handle on FrontEnds but I was sort of lost instantly. The website does need to up the tutorial game, but I realize its still beta. Having said that, I can't wait. Walter:beerglass:
marxkemp Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Did the same last night. Did not have to much problems. Just open the configs and xmls. I think some great hs artists will have a blast making themes!
Awakened Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 I ended up making a theme for RetroFE: (the theme is full 1080p; the mp4togif site I used added the black bars :/) The default theme's xml file is commented quite well, which helped a lot in learning how the layouts work. What I came up with feels cleaner and less claustrophobic compared to what I use in HyperSpin. The extra resolution helps a lot. The frontend is pretty functional for a beta. It's definitely missing some stuff I would want to be able switch over to it full time though. No per game launchers, remember last game/system, or letter jump yet. Whatever it uses for video playback seems to wash out the preview video's contrast a little too. But emb's been updating it regularly, so I'm sure that stuff will get there soon enough

damageinc86 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Yeah that doesn't look half bad. I still love hyperspin's wheel set-up. It just feels better, but it's just a matter of personal taste there.
phulshof Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 Something like this? http://www.retrofe.com/forum/index.php?topic=136.0
Awakened Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I like how the animation and image manipulation is flexible enough to replicate the HyperSpin wheel. I'm just using the straight logo list menu setup from the default theme. To make it show up vertically in subcollections, all I had to do was swap x and y offsets and figure out the spacing for the menu. For my theme I didn't really want something that looked too much like a copy of HyperSpin.
hakmanplayer Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 A handheld, mini Linux PC or tablet running Hyperspin? Place this software on hardware similar to the OpenPandora//PYRA hardware or a dedicated Hyperspin/Windows tablet with a bluetooth controller paired?
ninja2bceen Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Question : what happens when windows 7 and 8 are no longer supported? Will hyperspin be compatible, will it die with a later versions of windows if it isn't open source or developed anymore? Advance the cause to 100%. http://hyperbase.hyperspin-fe.com/ Planet Geekdom, Subscribe for Tutorials! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdcby-s2GwriaOHGmVC2vGA?sub_confirmation=1&app=desktop
Styphelus Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 BBB said he was planing on releasing a new version of Hyperspin this year. Fingers crossed!
snarfo Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Question : what happens when windows 7 and 8 are no longer supported? Will hyperspin be compatible, will it die with a later versions of windows if it isn't open source or developed anymore? It's worked fine with the pre-release versions of Windows 10 I've been playing with so that's promising... Windows 10 should be a pretty viable platform for a while, like XP and 7 were. I think Microsoft will be able to placate many of the Vista/8.x haters... personally I really like Windows 8.1 a lot, but then I was never in love with the start menu--- to me it was slow, inelegant and downright sloppy in some of its implementations. hakmanplayer Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Interesting question. I say that because in reality the current batch of Hyperspin retro roms do not change with the times or an upgraded OS for that matter.Hence the name retro. Perhaps a few unplayable games can be made playable. However if the new OS's can leave the gate open to flawless emulation of PS2 PS3, XBOX 360,Wii and certain PC games then that would change many things.
cowbells Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 BBB said he was planing on releasing a new version of Hyperspin this year. Fingers crossed! Sweet! This is the best news I've read in awhile. To be honest though, there's so much to work on, I never really was bothered by the fact that HS2 still hasn't been released.
reznnate Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 There is some fantastic new hardware running Android. I want to make an arcade cabinet for retro Android games. I also want to take Hyperspin on the road with a portable. It would be awesome if someone could make Hyperspin work on Android, leveraging all the community effort from emumovies and this site. ;-)
warpig Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 I've just bought a tablet for £70 that has full Windows 8.1, Intel Atom Quad Core CPU, 32GB storage with MicroSD slot for a further 64GB and can take any external USB devices such as hard drives, keyboard, mouse etc. It also works with Bluetooth devices so maybe Wiimotes? It's called a Linx 8 if anybody's interested. I think it will run Hyperspin no problem.
phulshof Posted April 7, 2015 Author Posted April 7, 2015 Raspberry Pi support was just added as well. In the mean time, this is what my setup looks like:

phulshof Posted April 7, 2015 Author Posted April 7, 2015 How many themes you setup like this for systems? Currently, RetroFE uses global themes only; system or even game based themes are still on the issue list. I created a global theme that looks like this for every system I have on my ArcadePC. The videos, logos, console images, etc. are automatically taken from their corresponding directories.

Awakened Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 The videos, logos, console images, etc. are automatically taken from their corresponding directories. The cool thing is you can set up a theme to reload as many image assets as you want from system directories. Mine swaps out assets with different color schemes per system, which includes the backgrounds.
nathan1974au Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 very nice front end RetroFE the only problem is getting a binary and source to download! seems to be removed or something. just found the source! time to compile it and give it a go. (Midlife crisis) some have hot rods, some have gold chains, I have arcade machine with hyperspin.

Which link on http://www.retrofe.com/download.php is dead? If it is I'll notify emb to have a look at it; binaries should be available for the latest version at least.
