Great job.

I've switched to widescreen on Hyperspin recently, I'm using Unified Mega Theme and other for system and default themes. I converted a lot of themes to widescreen, most of them PC games. I might upload them all once I finish converting my folder of PC games (done like 70, 20 or so left).

WOW!!! Great job! So how exactly do you go about doing this? This is amazing!

it's 3am in the morning as I'm reading your post and you know what? I'm gonna go through the process I've been using and post screens. Hopefully you and others will find it interesting...

I've split more than half of my Mame Games Themes collection into different categories based off of Arcade Manufacturer's. For instance, I have 72 Themes (Not including the Default lol) in my Atari Collection Themes folder. I highlighted all of the zip files and extracted them into their own subsequent folders...

Then, I have an automated process in photoshop that automatically resizes all of the images with every folder. The 72 themes shown above took about 10 minutes for it to go through all of them and "squash" the images. Here's what the automated process does...

Let's use the atari classics game "Arabian" as an example...

Here's an image from the folder, the logo for the game (Artwork1.png) open in photoshop...

After it's open, change the canvas to 1366x768...

Then, here it is on the new canvas...

After that, go back and change the "image size" to 1024x768...

Here's what happens...

Repeat that process for all remaining images within the folder.

But the Background.png poses a problem. All Backgrounds are in 1024x768, which is a 4:3 resolution. It can not be squashed at 1024x768. It has to be extended to 1366x768, a 16:9 resolution and 'then' scaled back down to 1024x768, so when you play Hyperspin on your widescreen, the background will be stretched to it's proper size.

Here's the Background.png open in photoshop and already on a 1366x768 canvas...

As you could see, there are blank spaces to the left and right of the background image. And remember, the image can not be stretched. So, what do we do?

Let's start off by moving the background to the far left of the canvas...

Next, let's get creative. Fill in the right side black with the paint bucket tool...

Pretty cool, but now we have a cut off castle-building thingy in the bottom right hand corner and an incomplete moon up above. What can we do to fix this?...

Here's what it looks like placed in the zip file "WITHOUT" the other image files. With Hyperspin open...

Next, place the Artwork files into the zip and here's what it looks like...

Lookin' good. Next, I'll place the right video in the corresponding video folder and adjust it's resolution using the theme.xml in the zip file. just double click the arabiana.zip and then double click the theme.xml from within the zip. Change the video "w" to it's right resolution and "y" to it's right resolution. Let's find out what the resolution should be...

And there ya have it....

P.S. --- I had to work today and spent all my free time researching how to edit .swf files. But I was able to convert 3 other Atari Classics Themes. Plus the 1 "we" just did, that makes 4 more uploaded to my FTP. "Atari Classics/Game Themes" ............

Also, mp4's from emumovies are in 640x480. had that been a 640x480 video "without" a video.png frame... I would have made the resolution for the video 480x480 within the theme.xml. Thus stretching to 640x480 once played on a 16:9 widescreen. It's proper resolution.

I just overwrote the Batman theme on the FTP with a better one. I replaced the Background with a badass skyline of Gotham City. Looks fuckin' awesome if you ask me...

Bakerman, where have you been all this time? Nice tutorial. This is great!

I haven't tried them yet but since you're not converting them to swf, do they still look sharp good? Goin to have a look at them tonight.

Suhrvivor, please post your PC themes. I've been setting up my PC games recently. It would be nice to have to themes to go with them.

As a rule, should we post 16:9 PSD files? It would be nice to have them all on the FTP ready for the new hyperspin. I can start converting some themes as well.

I haven't converted any with .swf's yet. I'm currently learning how to edit them. If you want me to, once I learn how to edit them - I can post a tutorial, because I think I just about have it down.

Also, I really don't know why I'd save the PSD's because the theme isn't constructed in Photoshop. I could show you how to create a script within photoshop that would turn all images back to their original resolution's and the backgrounds as well. Wouldn't even get close to taking as long as you think. Pretty automated and fast.

I already wrote a tutorial on how to convert them to swf. It's somewhere in the unified theme thread.

You don't construct your themes in photoshop before importing them into hypertheme? That's how most of us create them. Hypertheme even has an import feature for PSDs.

If you could drop your scripts in your FTP folder or show us hot to create them, that would be great.

Dude, I'd love nothing more than to see your tutorial. I will look for it first thing once I'm done making this post.

And to answer your questions... Yes, to when you asked if I construct my themes in photoshop first --- No, to the part about implementing them into hypertheme.

If you remember from the tutorial I just presented; After I initially get done with the conversions, I highlight all of the folders, rezip them and drag them back into the original themes folder overwriting all of the original themes. The only thing for me to edit after that are the backgrounds. Once they're done I just drag them back into the zip.

Also, in the tutorial, on the last step, I got lucky with that particular theme. At the end of the tutorial when I rezipped all of the edited artwork and had placed the edited background back into the zip, they all appeared in their proper positions after opening hyperspin.

A lot of the time the images are off by a little bit do to the resizing. I use the xml to adjust the x and y positioning. I also use the xml to set the resolution of the video. I think it's much faster that way.

The good thing for a possible 16:9 hyperspin release would be the ease in which it will be to convert these themes back and keep the new backgrounds without having to use hypertheme or PSD's. I will show you how to create a script that would do just that,,,,,,,,,,,right now....

So, let's go ahead and use the theme from the last tutorial to create an automated "batch script" in photoshop. Which, will convert ALL of the images canvases back to 1366x768...

First thing you need to do is open ANY image from the already unzipped theme in photoshop. Remember, IT CAN BE ANY image from the theme. We only need to use 1 image to create an automated script in photoshop.

So, I'm gonna use the background "we" created last night...

Click OK,

And that's that.

Great tutorial - I don't know much about Photoshop and HyperTheme, but I can recognise excellent work when I see it!

Whatever method you use to assemble the finished themes, it's probably best to retain all the source material in a suitable format for importing into a future version of HyperTheme with widescreen support (fingers crossed), to avoid having to convert everything all over again.

Converting mame themes has kinda died down, but don't worry. (For anyone that's interested or remotely cares...lol)

Due to styphelus's advice, I read about converting all theme images to swf's and found out a lot of awesome stuff.

Looks like I'm gonna have to go back and reconvert everything I've done thus far. Also, I've started working on a pretty cool project that hopefully some of you will appreciate.

The working title for my project is "Hyperspin Basic - Remastered". I'm taking "Hypersync-only" artwork and converting it to 16:9. The themes are getting a refinished touch with all png's converted to swf. They're lookin pretty sweet.

Basically I'm remastering a lot of the "basic" setups that hypersync offers.

I wanna show a couple pics, but remember, this stuff hasn't been uploaded yet. I wanna garner some responses/requests before I waste my time uploading it all.

Anyways,

I'm converting in alphabetical order, all of the systems I have setup on my own system.

For instance, here's the "basic" Main Menu Theme for Amstrad GX4000, only now it has been "remastered" with all .swf images and awesomely converted to 16:9. Also, the systems Main Menu and Default Videos are also at their proper resolutions. (640x480)...

Main Menu...

This is the Default theme hypersync had to offer,,,,, plus all Box art has been converted.

I even converted all of the letters to 16:9.

And here's a screen shot of the wheel art in the background. All of the wheel art logos were downloaded from hypersync, but were placed on an amstrad wheel template. All the wheel are you see in the background has been converted to 16:9.

And I'd like to take this time to hopefully make point that some will find VERY useful. Also, hopefully I'm not being redundant...

First off, my computer is not an optimized gaming computer. I don't have any type of special graphics card or anything geared towards extreme speed. Well, I have 8 GB's of RAM, but that's it. All in all, my computer is average to a little above average with the exception of the upgraded RAM.

I'm making this point, because I want to say that I have optimal performance with Hyperspin. And a large part is due to reconverting these themes and using artwork that is being properly displayed.

The piece of advice I want to give to anyone that cares --- Is setting your wheel width within HyperHQ. NOT hyperlaunchHQ,,,,,,,"HyperHQ".

Click on any system you have setup within hyperspin and under the wheel tab you will see a couple of boxes with numbers in it. The top 1 is for setting the width of your selected wheel art. The bottom 1 is for how big you want all of the other artwork to be. I recommend setting it all to these dimensions...

For example. I like to use wheel templates because they all have the same width and height. Most wheels created with Auto Kustom are 400x175 or 400x150. If I convert a set of 400x175's to 16:9, then they become 296x175. I set the top box in HyperHQ to 296 and the bottom box to 175.

Trust me, this little adjustment worked wonders on my setup. Scrolling through games has become a breeze and extremely seamless. Lovin' it.

Hopefully some of you will comment and keep this going. As I research ways to become better with everything Hyperspin affiliated, I'm trying to come up with a sense of direction of what I would really like to accomplish for myself and the community.

Anyways, I'm done rambling for now...

i look forward to anyone's feedback.

P.S. --- Now I'm starting to think I should call this project, "Hyperspin Default - Remastered".

I don't know if I'll convert everything hypersync has to offer, but I see no problem with converting all "default" sets.

I don't know how these screenshots are looking on your guys' end, but on mine they look like fuckin' crap.

Anyways, here's a tremendously polished Default Atari 5200 Main Menu theme. Remember, if you see ANY pixelation, it's due to the screenshot. Trust me, everything I've posted is so polished it's not even funny, but I'll laugh anyways. Lol HAHHAHAHA

Atari 5200 Default theme, box art, cart art, wheel art, pointer, and letters all to 16:9...

Well, for anyone that's interested... I have a bunch of artwork converted and am currently working on editing swf's. Discovered some pretty cool stuff. I'll be posting a bunch of screenshots and starting a new FTP upload. Something a little more organized.

Swf's are the hardest to edit, because sometimes they are animations consisting of seperate images that you have to put back together. I'm getting good at it though, and seeing some awesome results converting them to widescreen. Preserving all of these old 4:3 themes is very enjoyable.

Hopefully I can keep some of you interested.
