gibbawho Posted February 2, 2014 Author Posted February 2, 2014 I might even move duke to the left side. His arm is overlaying too much on the video imo. switching the positioning of the computer pic and duke could be enough to counter-act that. it wouldn't be straying too far from the unified look. all my sega themes are flipped like that too.
kyoken Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Anyone have a US SNES (original style and in good condition) and an ok camera? The pic I have in the SNES theme is just slightly not good enough for an HD theme.Could I get someone to try for a pic from the same angle? Try htbackdrops.org here you can find great console images, pal and ntsc in 1920x1080

If I flip it, I think duke's left arm would then obscure the video pane..or do you mean to put duke behind the video pane and set the pc on the foreground?? bb_neo Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Can we continue to have access to the PSD files? The only thing I do not like on those Unified Megathemes is that the consoles and PC bases computers are half hidden by the video frame. For me, seeing the machines is the most important. I prefer to reduce the size of the mascots. Thanks
manicshere Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I quite like that layout. Needs improvement, but I'm guessing it's a mock up
Styphelus Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Nice! I like both your themes just the way you have them. Are you going to upload the PSD files for your themes? If you keep listening to what everyone wants, you will never get anything done. With the PSD files, people can change the themes around to the way they like it. It's much easier that way and keeps everyone happy.
brolly Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Not a big fan of using artwork for remakes in the original systems, but it does look good.

And you're right but sometimes you do end up having with a better looking theme.I quite like that layout. Needs improvement, but I'm guessing it's a mock up Are you referring to the joystick?I didn't expect this reception, as I wasn't sure about the colorful background. I thought it might be seen as a political statement with the Olympics starting one of these days. thanks guys Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk | My themes / downloads | Get the MS-DOS Wheel sound pack | Get your MS-DOS game themes here | Get the MS-DOS wheel set here | My YouTube channel | WarcrafT - Lord of the clans |ZeroJay's Ultimate DooM archive
KlopjerO Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 btw, shall I start a new thread for these "computer based"Unified mega themes ? as to not distract from the effort that Gibbawho and Styphalus are putting into theirs ? the feeling grips me that I'm sort of Hyjacking this thread | My themes / downloads | Get the MS-DOS Wheel sound pack | Get your MS-DOS game themes here | Get the MS-DOS wheel set here | My YouTube channel | WarcrafT - Lord of the clans |ZeroJay's Ultimate DooM archive
manicshere Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Are you referring to the joystick? Both the joystick and the characters have a bunch of artifacts, jagged edges and in general the cut is sort of odd looking. I definitely believe in your sense of for theme creation want you to keep at it, but teach yourself to us the pen tool and you'll work 10x faster and have a 10x better end result.

ejfriis Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Holy cow, these are really incredible looking! Nice work everyone! Now question: If I understand correctly, for proper aspect ratio I need to resize all my boxes and cartridge artwork. What is the formula for doing this? I was toying around a bit and it seems like dividing the width by 1.33 gets it looking good, but I'm wondering if that is truly the correct way of doing this. Also, what are your suggestions on programs to use for batch resizing?
Styphelus Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 This is what I do - I open up one of the system themes (Sega 32X PSD file has a system theme in there) or take a screen shot and re-size to 1280 x 720. Import the box and cart art into the theme in photoshop and play around with the size you want. Once you have the proper size, change the image size 1024x 768. That will "crunch" the artwork (along with the rest of the theme). Copy and paste the artwork layer into a new file. Will give you the size you need. A bit tedious but tis way i can re-size it and lay everything out the way I want it to look. To batch re-size I use Fotosizer. It's free. Drag png files into it > custom size > uncheck aspect ratio > type in the horizontal and vertical values and click Start. All done.
gibbawho Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 What is the formula for doing this? if you re-size your artwork to 75% width while maintaining the original height it should look proper in widescreen. PS - with some of these themes I also resize the artwork to 80% (maintaining aspect ratio) just so they fit a bit nicer. Particularly sega cd and the like. in that case you'd resize to 80% first (maintaining aspect ratio).. then squish it to 75% width.
ejfriis Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 75% is pretty spot on, I just tested with a square. And I'll check out Fotosizer. Thanks again guys.
OneBadVeggie Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Duke would approve Make a list, people will pick them up. Hyperspin could do with a complete set of these awesome themes. Well, personally I just need Daphne, Sega Model 2, Sega Model 3, Atomiswave, and Naomi. I really love the MAME design with the two characters on the side. Honestly the only things I would probably change for each machine is the marquee, the characters on the side, and the background. Maybe that's not very creative, but it's simple.
Styphelus Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 There's a Daphne and Atomiswave theme in my folder already. Maybe someone can do a better Atomiswave in the future.
OneBadVeggie Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 I really like the Daphne one, it looks great. But I agree I think I like the uniformity of the arcade systems where each side has a character rather than the machine like the Atomiswave. It sorta makes me want an alternate MAME menu in a similar style with the video in the middle, the MAME logo up top, and Ryu and Chun Li on the sides, and no arcade machine. Again, just for uniformity sake. Edit: No offense to the original design for the MAME list, just this is a "Unified" Megatheme, and MAME is the only one right now currently sort of outside of the overall theme.
kyoken Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 please could consider as representative ryo hazuki for dreamcast, theme? the truth is that I do not like Zero too .... maybe a Crazy taxi cab or a Soul calibur Fighter..... I like this:
Unknown50862 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Sorry for the lack of updates everyone. I had to dedicate the weekend to other responsibilities, so I couldn't get around to minting the main menu themes. Good news is, all of gibbawho's initial ~40 theme designs should be complete in a 16:9 non-animated format! The first revisions were completed about a week ago, but I've gone back and updated all of them at this point. Changes include better resolution, new video border, and adjusted artwork animations. I've uploaded the better resolution versions to both mine and Styphelus' folder as usual. However, the other changes were only uploaded to my folder, in case some prefer the previous borders/animation over these ones. For the video border, unfortunately I couldn't use gibbawho's latest design. I tried, but without being in the animated flash HD format the border just wasn't detailed enough to look right. Instead I used his previous version which was showcased in his prototype Genesis theme. The artwork animation changes are also based off of the original Genesis theme. Here are some examples of the new border in a variety of themes. Of course you'll have to load the themes up in Hyperspin to see the other changes. KlopjerO Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Speaking of revisions, I had an idea to adapt the Wii version for WiiWare. Unfortunately for reasons I do not understand a hi-res image of the logo cannot be found. Does someone have it in their library?
