Hyperspin 16:9 Artwork and Themes (Converted from 4:3)

But some themes contain fixed video frames. Don't let that deter you from doing things accordingly to this thread. I took the video.png from the Castlevania theme and fit it around (proportionally correct of course) a 640x480 box in photoshop... so let me show you my rendition of the Castlevania theme...

While I don't mind having bigger video, just a little thing about this.

I am assuming that your standard for video is 480x480 (640x480 stretched). Thing is with the way I understand hyperspin works, even if you put 480x480 as video dimension, that's all you'll get, you wont be getting the full video resolution anyway, since hyperspin will squash it down to 480x480 then stretch it to fit full screen. (Which will give you a 480x480 stretched to 640x480).

The only way you could take advantage of the full 640x480 video resolution and maintaining a proper aspect ration is to have your video to 640x640 so hyperspin actually doesn't do any downsizing, but only stretch on height initially and then stretch on width for fullscreen 16x9.

Also keep in mind that for most console/game that doesn't use 3D, having a bigger resolution doesn't make a difference. Ex: A Nintendo game video won't look any better at 640x480 then it would at the NES standard resolution which is 256x240, ignoring post processing effect, which emumovies don't use. Obviously, this doesn't apply to system that use 3d calculation, as these can and will look "better" on higher resolution.

640x640 is just too big in most theme for me, so instead of trying to get 480x480 to fit in the theme I am modifying, I try to make it as big as possible while keeping it square and still not hiding/being hidden too much by the rest of the theme and/or trying to preserve the original theme's feel.

Sorry if this might be badly explain, but in the end what I am saying is the reason I wasn't trying to get the full resolution of the video in (640x640) is because it would look too big, so I went with the 2nd choice, keeping the themes feel. I am not against bigger video, but I don't think it should be required to be 480x480, since that doesn't even achieve what we are aiming for.

And just adding to the process, If video are angled, the stretching is not only applied to the width of the video (or artwork for that matter), but to a part of the height too, since hyperspin doesn't stretch each artwork itself, but the fullscreen result horizontally. To get the actual proper resizing to both height and width to get a pure 16x9 effect on angled video or artwork, we would have to calculate it with the angle and using COS, SIN or TAN, can't remember which one, but that's way over my head, as I haven't used those since high school. :)

For example, using easy to verify numbers. Turn a video 90 degree using 480x480 in the theme, the result will be a video in 3x4 or looking like 480x640 in hyperspin

I'm not saying this because I think we should absolutely take that into account, as the difference is pretty minimal as most theme use either 0 or a minimal angle on their video. Just food for tought

And nevermind that thing about angle, while in the shower I figured a much easier way. Here is a table that shows which value should be applied to width and height for certain angle.

Ex: 0 degree, obviously apply 75% squash to width, 100% to height (or leave height alone)

45 degree, apply 87.5% squash to both width and height

15 Degree, apply squash of 79.17% on width and 95.83% on height

These value apply to video too, if a video is at a 10 degree angle you'd multiply 640 x 77.78% and 480 x 97.22% so

effectively 640 x 0.7778 and 480 x 0.9722. Thus a video at a 10 degree angle to have proper ratio when stretched should be 498 x 467.

These number works on negative degree too, -10 is the same as 10. If you go over 90 degree, well just rotate your image instead! (or just come back up the list, 89 degree have the same value as 91 degree)

Pretty sure this is right, as it make sense to me, when going from 0 degree being 75% width 100% height

and 90 degree being 100% width 75% height. Although maybe someone better then me at math can confirm.

Edit: Checked out with the asterix theme, using a ruler on my tv screen to check the ratio after applying this math to it, seems it obviously work on a 90 degree angle, but using my numbers on a 13 degree angle takes him further away from a perfect 4:3 ratio then without using these number... I'm confused. Although neither of those are perfect 4:3 like it is on a 0 degree or 90 degree angle.

This chart is absolutely brilliant.

Well dude, this may sound corny, but it seems like we're partners now. lol

I'm experiencing a big time creative block now due to this video dimensions issue.

I really got to thinking about it also, and after looking at your chart... WHICH IS FUCKING BRILLIANT BY THE WAY... Who do you think you are?...Einstein?

Lol. Just joking around, seriously though man - You're pretty f'n intelligent. Keep it up.

... I realized that we need to try and deduce/decide how to go forward when it comes to video dimensions. Hopefully, you're as serious as I am about this project.

With that said. I tell you what - I'll dive back into the world of aspect ratio's and video dimensions to help find the best way to go about this.

A possible scenario that I'm thinking about is well, pretty simple... We stick to 4:3 ratios or "possibly" 16:9 ratios for videos. I have a huge problem going away from 640x480. I know it poses its problems, BUT TO ME, "IT IS" what this project is about. At least for me. It is 100% about presentation. No matter what type of processing was done to these videos, the truth still remains that they are mainly at a 640x480 resolution. Going away from that can seriously take away from the PRESENTATION of all the artwork involved.

Hopefully you can respect my point. No matter how "layman" it may sound...

But anyways....

I've also been considering converting all videos to 16:9 resolutions. It would fit the widescreen moniker, BUT ONLY if I can find a good enough procedure for doing so and HOPEFULLY maintaining quality.

Keep it up and I look forward to reading your insight.

I finally got it. Took awhile, but like I had been saying before... The videos need to be resized on a 4:3 scale. Unless if it has been done in a different resolution, but the common resolution amongst emumovies is 640x480.

Rotating the angle only changes the dynamics of the "canvas size." The video is fine. I have noticed little glitchy details in videos that are placed with a resolution that doesn't fit the 4:3 scale that they were processed at. Such as 400x400, 250x250 and so on.

Plus, I figured out how to get rid of the rhombus effect that occurs with videos that are condensed for widescreen setup and rotated at an angle.

In fact, I am now confident in every aspect of converting these themes. Confident in the fact that I now know how to do what I see as being 100% efficient.

I believe that nobody knows or chooses to utilize what it takes to not only properly convert every aspect of all of the old themes, but I fully know how to convert every aspect of every theme IMPROVING quality over the originals. Basically this project is PRESERVING all of the old themes in the most efficient manner to ensure longevity as people switch to 16:9 setups. I have every practical detail in place to ensure 100% efficiency.

I have been so indulged with all of the processes that I've had to learn to take on this project that I KNOW my themes and project should be the #1 option for most people. Not to say that there is not any awesome work being done by other members. In fact, there are projects that surpass me BY FAR when it comes to originality and detail. I will never be original, nor will I ever be the guy that comes up with all kinds of modern ideas and unique artwork. My project is centered around converting mainly EVERYTHING that has already been finished and MINTED on Hypersync and within the Hyperspin downloads section. Don't get me wrong, I may use artwork gathered from the FTP, but the PRIMARY focus is to convert to widescreen and preserve all of the old 4:3 artwork.

My processes have become so finely tuned that it has come to fruition that I will need to go back and start from the top and redo all themes that have "rotated" images or videos. I now know how to PROPERLY convert rotated images for Hyperspin. For what I need to accomplish I will be making those changes and therefore, starting a new thread. A thread that organizes this project into sections so I don't continue 1 long thread of misc. everything.

For all of the people that have been downloading my themes, keep them for now. They are "nearly" perfect. But I ensure you that I now know the littlest of techniques to do everything PERFECTLY. You guys will appreciate it in the long run.

I can't wait. This project has finally become so fine tuned that I KNOW it can't be topped in overall efficiency and presentation.

Like I said, I can't wait.

And that's that for now.

I couldn't reply via Tapatalk yesterday for some reason, so have just found time to come back here and say a huge thank you to Bakerman, Blackened15 and everyone else who has already been creating widescreen themes and laid some of the groundwork for this. It's a giant leap forward for HyperSpin as far as I'm concerned.

I would love to see this recognised as an official project to make all existing themes and artwork readily available in both 4:3 and 16:9 versions via the Downloads section (and HyperBase Live when it's ready), with new releases being converted as a matter of course as part of the approval process. I see a lot of cabinets being built with widescreen monitors, or 50" TVs even, and we need to move with the times. It will be great if we can add a high quality and complete widescreen solution to HyperSpin right now instead of waiting to see what Billy comes up with in version 2.0.

As I've mention several times elsewhere, I use zerojay's method of faking subwheels to redirect my main menu to two separate instances of HyperSpin: one for arcade systems with 4:3 themes and one for home systems with the 16:9 mega themes. Handy as this is, it's a royal pain when it comes to keeping the media up to date as I have to point HyperSync at another folder with all the systems in it, then manually copy the new files into the arcade and home folders, and I haven't even tried adding resized box/cart/disc art yet. It sounds like HyperBase Live may solve this problem for me if it can handle multiple instances, but the prospect of having everything together again and all in 16:9 is positively mouthwatering.

Let me put it to you this way...

I'm about to change the scope of how themes are made in general.

As in, (and this is to everyone that reads this) hold on to your hats.

Get ready.

Need a little bit more time.

Btw, just letting you know before you go and use that table I made last week, it's not good. I'll come up with a proper one tommorow or something.

Don't need 1 brother.

Like I said, things are about to be kicked up a notch.

BIG TIME

Currently working as I'm typing this.

Gotta go.

But please not an official project like the "HyperSpin Project" where it's apparently not possible to comment on.

Oh no my friend. That will most definitely not be the case.

In fact, in the long term (once I become established) I hope to build a community of my own where LOTS of people will be able to comment on everything I do.

Anyways, digging the new site.

And for anyone that came back to this thread to hopefully find somethin' out... I would like to say this:

I'm currently (still) working on a project that is panning out to be pretty special. Not riding on the short bus, "special."

But,

A project that is very special in all aspects. I plan on giving some kind of preview soon, I'm sure there are A LOT of you that are going to enjoy what you see.

Just a little more time...

I am currently IMMERSED in Graphic Arts 101, molding myself into an artist. I can't stay in the world of layman's artistry any longer. I must gain some kind of talent.

Progress is going great and I can't wait. I just can't wait.

And that's that.

Don't think the thread died, I've just put themes on hold while I wait to see what you've come up with that could possibly top the work you've been doing lately. How are things going? Looking forward to a sneak peek.

Remember that I'm a novice when it comes to the Adobe products. Or anything Graphic Arts affiliated.

But I'm making good progress and should have a video preview pretty soon.

I was looking for the Mario theme shown in the first post, couldn't find on the FTP ?

I've been trying to upload it since reading your comment, but I keep getting this "critical file transfer" error in Filezilla. Don't know why, but I'll keep trying.

Id be willing to help if you need video conversion, and if you want to do it yourself, I would highly recommend Final Cut Pro's compressor program, it will let you batch add and convert on a pro level without losing or unnecessarily adding to the file size like some of the consumer software out there (isky, videoconverter, etc).

And if your looking for emulators to convert art, there is always FBA, SCUMMvm & PopCap

Hi,

That is awesome and it just so happens that I'm struggling to get AAE set up right now.

Those pics say they are 1920 x 1080, but I thought Hyperspin only supported 1366 x 768 (at least I couldn't get Hypertheme to scale a 180 image correctly).

Flash or particles? :)

Guys, why don't you ask modified themes to be approved and moved on FTP (FTP should be under major revision, I guess a 16:9 official folder can be considered)

@metalzoic

Hyperspin's max native resolution is 1024*768, using flash you can get better quality images running HS at upscaled 1080p (it's not a native 1080p, windows upscale 1024*768 to 1920*1080)
